Here are some ideas for club activities. I will try to organize some of these events / activities. Please contact me if interested in helping out or organizing. Mike T
• Meet monthly at local bar / restaurant for social get together. Good way for us to get to know each other outside of cycling. Also get to know spouses and significant others. Some of us wouldn’t recognize each other without our helmets and cycling glasses.
• Social Activities outside of cycling. In offseason can organize X-country / snow-shoeing get-togethers to promote off-season cross training fitness / spin classes. Organize wine tasting weekend day trip. Other ideas welcome!
• Annual “Banquet” at beginning and end of cycling season. Ones that we’ve had in the past were excellent. Let’s continue.
• Weekend Rides. Continue organizing them. Great idea to have an “A” ride, “B” ride and even a “C” ride if interest. Try to make the rides open to everyone. Have a friendly and accepting attitude towards all riders. Let them know that they are all welcome to join us.
• Organize Cayuga County Cycling Map. We already have some cycling routes / maps posted on the website. Many counties (Onondaga / Tompkins / Monroe) have printed cycling maps sponsored by the local tourist agency. We could work with the local agency to have such a map done to promote cycling in the area.
• Bike Lanes. Work with county in making and maintaining formal bike lanes (painted lines with wider paths) through commuter roads, (such as Owasco Road). With concern for energy conservation and more people biking / commuting, this may be an important issue and a safety issue. Encouraging town / county to maintain current road shoulders. Putting up a sign stating “Bike Lane” doesn’t really work when there is no shoulder to ride on!
• Meet Fall and Spring for bike tune-up. Get together on a Saturday afternoon with our bikes to replace cables / housings, brake pads, chains, tune-up derailleurs, fix bent derailleur hangers, etc. Club can provide parts at cost. Good way to learn about bike maintenance and more importantly keep bikes running smoothly and safely.
• Community Service. Show the community that we care. There are spring and fall road trash pickups that we can participate in. Participate in local charity rides (i.e. Ride for Missing Children, etc). Help out the local volunteer fire departments. - give back to them for helping us on our bike races.
• Provide Cycling Education to youths. Organize a weekend cycling event in which kids / newbies invited to learn about safe cycling. Can arrange with vendor to give away free bike helmets. Good way to get younger people interested in cycling.
• Get new Club Cycling Jerseys / Kit. New design would be nice.
• Organize an Owasco Velo Club Racing Team. Seems like there are enough local cyclists with interest in racing that we could form our own racing team. Makes more sense to race with the guys / gals with whom we train.
• Sponsor local bike races. We already do that. Why don’t we form a closer liaison with the Owasco Flyer bike race and in fact sponsor it?
Open to new ideas and recommendations!!
